Riverbanks Zoo & Garden Calendar Update 2025

For Immediate Release: January 8, 2025

Riverbanks Zoo Reveals Starting Lineup For 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C., January 8, 2025 — Riverbanks Zoo and Garden kicks off 2025 with the highly anticipated return of Free Fridays and the introduction of a lofty new resident, Tahini the giraffe. Residents of Richland and Lexington counties can enjoy complimentary admission every Friday through February and explore the Zoo's diverse wildlife and conservation efforts.

"Riverbanks Zoo and Garden experienced a landmark year in 2024, celebrating our 50th anniversary, welcoming our 40 millionth guest, and achieving significant milestones in conservation," said Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo. "As we step into 2025, we're buzzing with excitement about new animal arrivals and another year of creating unforgettable experiences.”

Riverbanks Welcomes Tahini

Riverbanks Zoo recently welcomed Tahini; a 2-year-old reticulated giraffe born at Zoo Miami. This new addition is part of Riverbanks Zoo's commitment to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, aimed at promoting genetic diversity among giraffes in human care. Tahini was determined to be a great match for Bruce, Riverbanks' resident male giraffe. She is already adjusting well to her new home and forming a bond with 12-year-old Winston, who is helping her acclimate to the Zoo's routines. Guests can soon expect to see Tahini in her outdoor habitat, where she will contribute to Riverbanks' ongoing efforts in giraffe conservation and education. See Tahini’s arrival and interaction with Winston.

Free Fridays Return

Every Friday in January and February 2025, residents of Richland and Lexington counties can receive free daytime admission to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden by showing proof of residency (e.g., valid driver’s license, property tax statement or vehicle registration) at any ticket window.

Sensory-Friendly Night at Wild Lights

On Thursday, January 9, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will host a sensory night during the Wild Lights event that includes dimmed lighting, quieter music, and designated quiet zones for a more comfortable experience for guests with sensory sensitivities. In collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden aims to create a more inclusive environment for all guests.

Sweetgrass Basket Weaving

A Sweetgrass Basket Weaving workshop will be held on Saturday, February 1, led by expert weaver Mary Graham-Grant. This hands-on experience will allow participants to craft their own small sweetgrass basket while learning about the rich Gullah tradition behind this centuries-old craft. The workshop will take place in the Waterfall Junction Learning Center at Riverbanks Botanical Garden. $70 for members or $85 for general public.
